Happiness

proposal / van Eesteren museum / Inter-Arcitecture / Gerrit Rietveld Academie

For the district Nieuw-West in Amsterdam, I was asked by the "van Eesteren Museum" to design a facility proposal for public space. During my exploration through "de Westelijke Tuinsteden", I came across many dated places, which appeared gloomy because of their functionlessness and it made me feel sad. Like the roundabout at the Johan Huizingalaan and Cornelis Lelylaan, which I chose as my research area. Passengers passed by hastily and chose for cut-off routes instead of the designed paths. In addition, the path around the roundabout is dangerously close to the road. To improve the quality of space, the idea for a bridge arose. Through the coloured balustrades, there is a new perspective possible on the environment. The visual effect of the repetitive bright colours of the balustrades can generate cliché feelings of happiness. Because each step differs in height and depth, attention is required and people become aware of every step, which means you get out of the automatic rhythm off the daily routine.
